How to Experiment with Seasonal Colors
With Fall upon us and Winter quickly approaching, I’m sure all you fashionistas out there have whipped out your trench coats and blanket scarves. Of course, the best part about fall fashion is the shopping! In stores (and hot off the runway), we’re seeing gorgeous jewel tones, nudes & neutrals, and of course burgundy! The question is, how do we merge these shockout colors into our everyday wardrobe? Here is my step-by-step formula for experimenting with seasonal colors.
Start by purchasing a small item like a crossbody bag or a t-shirt. You can easily find these items affordably at H&M, on Amazon, or even at your local thrift store (after all, everything old is new again). Work these pieces into your wardrobe while testing the color(s) against your skin tone and personal style. I took this burnt-orange bodysuit out for a test drive & fell in love with it!
Now you’re ready for a statement piece! You’ve tested yourself with a pair of burgundy sunglasses; now it’s time for the real deal. Head out and look for a statement piece: a jacket or even thigh high boots! You’ll be surprised how many styling options you’ll create by purchasing a simple staple piece in a color outside of your usuals. I opted for this chunky knit sweater dress in a color I've avoided for years (yellow). I'm glad I took the chance because I ended up really enjoying this dress and all it's vibrance.
Mix it Up!
Now’s your chance to mix and match your new pieces with your existing wardrobe. I often layer pencil skirts over mini dresses to create a stylish, work-appropriate look. Try mixing and matching a few of your own pieces to find what color combos look best with your new (or new-to-you) items. I combined these two earth tones for a simple yet chic officewear look.
Which seasonal colors are you. sporting this year? Personally, I’m a big fan of burnt-orange and olive green. They’re more versatile colors than I originally thought!
