Beauty Detox: How to Remove Toxins from Hair and Skin

Both our hair and skin are exposed daily to various toxins coming from our environment as well as the food we eat and the product’s we use. There is little that we can do about the environmental ones such as the air pollution, but we can definitely limit the amount we put into our body. The first step is detoxing our skin and hair and the second one is adjusting our nutritional and skin and hair care habits so as to keep the exposure to toxins at a minimal level.

This article covers both steps and is bound to provide you with useful advice for a truly successful beauty detox.

Change up your nutritional habits

A lot of toxins that end up in our skin and hair come from the food we out into our bodies. For example refined carbohydrates like sugar and white flower, if taken in extensive amounts, can visibly affect your skin. They don’t have any significant nutritional value but are great for feeding the bad bacteria in your gut, and since acne is a bacterial condition, it stands to reason that breakouts are linked to having an imbalance of the “wrong” kind of bacteria in your system. Another major effect processed carbs have on your skin is that they tend to age it visibly. The process is known as glycation and it causes proteins like collagen and elastin to become less effective leading to wrinkle formation and loss of skin elasticity. So naturally, processed carbs should be the first thing to go.

Next, it is time to clean out your lymphatic system by introducing an antioxidant and vitamin rich diet. You can include such great power foods like dark berries, cilantro, kidney beans and beets. Then we should try to accelerate your skin and hair healing process by introducing omega-packed foods like nuts, salmon, and avocado. It is time to make smoothies, they are an easy and inexpensive way to get all the necessary ingredients into your body in order to boost your complexion and have shinier hair.

Improve your skin and hair product choices

Out with the chemicals in with nature. We are bombarded daily with a lot of skin and hair products, and at times they are marketed as the magical cures that will make us look fantastic in a matter of days. But it is important to stop and read the labels in order to see the amount of unhealthy chemicals they possess. And if we want our skin and hair to truly be healthy it is important to limit the amount of toxic chemicals that we put on our body. For example a quality organic hair growth shampoo can contain argan oil which is rich in vitamin A & E along with Omega-6 fatty acids and linoleic acid they are all good for your hair and scalp and are not damaging in any way. This is that crucial difference between organic and natural skin and hair care and one that is rich in toxins.

So if the products that you are currently using possess ingredients such as parabens, triclosan or sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) you should get rid of them and exchange them for natural, toxin free products preferably organic. That way you will allow your skin and hair to recuperate and get back to their natural quality. You can only truly detox your body if you exclude all the possible sources of undesired toxins.

Now that you have stopped introducing new toxins into your body through nutrition and skin and hair care products all that is left is to get rid of the old ones completely. Well step one is a good bathtub detox. Warm water will open up your pores so that the carefully chosen ingredients can get in and do their work. Now an effective bathtub detox needs to include a mix of one part baking soda to two parts of Epsom salt. Of course you can add some essential oils like lavender and chamomile to soothe your skin inflammation, or even a bit of honey to help extract toxins from your body.  Finally don’t forget to rinse your hair with cool clean water, as hot water can substantially damage it making it lose its natural qualities.

You are now ready to step into the world toxin free with a beautiful complexion and shiny hair. Nature provides us with all the necessary ingredient to help our skin and hair but we sometimes tend to get lost in all the shiny advertisements that keep coming our way.
