5 Black Owned Businesses to Support this Holiday Season
As a young black entrepreneur, I am adamant about supporting fellow small businesses as well as fellow black businesses. During the holiday season, it is easy to visit a department store and scoop up a generic iPad case or a candle. This season, I am sharing some of my favorite black owned businesses that will add a personal and customized touch to your gift giving.
Izzy & Liv is an online boutique that celebrates and shares the beauty of black culture. Founder, Nicole Brown prides herself on designing pieces that Black people can relate to. Her site carries the famed Brown Sugar Box along with graphic tees, throw pillows, shower curtains, mugs, fleece blankets, cosmetic bags, lunch boxes, compact mirrors, water bottles, tote bags, baby onesies and clothes, greeting cards, journals, and stationery! Izzy & Liv may just be your one stop shop for the holidays!
Kloset Envy is an online boutique owned and operated by Jai Nice, a Jamaican young woman who is the very definition of a mogul! KlosetEnvy.com carries fabulous, vibrant, affordable clothing made for women of all shapes and sizes. My favorite item(s) on the site are the signature A$$ Pants! They are so amazingly flattering; I dare say every woman needs a pair in her closet!
Legendary Rootz is an online boutique that shares motivational and uplifting messages on every single piece of clothing. “Our founder believes our community deserves to be celebrated, one tee at a time. Our products show that we are unapologetically black and not afraid to show it.”
Adorned by Chi is “a lifestyle brand for misfits and magical girls” created by former blogger and self proclaimed weirdo, Jacque Amadi. I immediately fell in love with Jacque’s style because she admires lolita fashion just like I do. When she started, Adorned by Chi, me and thousands of other quirky black girls jumped for joy because their was finally a brand that represented our interests AND our background. Today, Adorned by Chi carries quirky, nostalgia inducing shirts and accessories as well as throw pillows, mugs, onesies. My favorite pieces at the moment is the “PPG Melanin” Square Pillow and the "Melanin Squad" Unisex Long Sleeve T-Shirt.
Juvia’s Place is a cosmetic brand that specializes in vibrant, deeply pigmented colors that beautifully compliment brown skin. A palette from Juvia’s place is the perfect gift for the makeup fiend on your list!
One of my favorite bloggers, Lisa of Lisa a la Mode recently interviewed Chichi Eburu, the founder of Juvia’s Place. Chichi shares how her African culture, heritage, and background inspire her when she is designing Juvia’s Place products. You can read the full interview here.
